Packing Materials Auckland: Boxes, Wrap and Tape From Local Movers

Good boxes and the right wrap do more to protect a household than anything that happens in the truck. Auckland Kiwi Movers supplies packing materials Auckland households and offices can order alongside a move or ahead of one, with quantities worked out for the size of your place.
Most people who ring us are in one of two spots. Either they are packing the house themselves and want to buy the right boxes once, or they have booked our crew and want the supplies sorted in the same call. We look after both. Tell us how many bedrooms you have, what is fragile and when you are moving, and we come back with a list: how many small, medium and large boxes, how much paper and bubble wrap, and which covers are worth having.
We have been moving Auckland homes and offices from our Manukau base since 2009, so the advice comes from what holds up in a loaded truck. You will not be sold wrap for furniture our movers already blanket on the day.

Locally owned, based in Manukau and moving Aucklanders since 2009. Fully insured. Mon to Sat, 7am to 7pm.

How many boxes do I need?

Use this as a starting point. These are guidelines, not fixed kits. A home with a full garage, a big book collection or a well-stocked kitchen will sit at the top of the range or above it.

Moving box guide by home size (guidelines only)
Home size Total boxes Small Medium Large Wardrobe boxes Tape rolls

Add packing paper for every kitchen box, bubble wrap for anything that would break if dropped, and one mattress bag per bed.

How ordering works

  1. Tell us about the move. Call 0800 549 149 or 022 400 5991, or fill in the quote form and set “Packing Materials” to yes. Give us your number of bedrooms and moving date.
  2. We recommend a list. You get quantities by box size, plus the wrap, tape and covers that suit what you own.
  3. We confirm price and timing. We confirm how and when your materials will reach you before you commit to anything.

You can add supplies to a house move so everything sits on one booking, or have our crew pack for you if you would rather not do it yourself. In that case the materials come with the packing service.

One thing worth knowing before you over-order: every truck we send already carries shrink wrap, moving blankets, a trolley and a tail lift, and blanket cover for polished furniture and bubble wrap for fragile items are included in our hourly moving rates. You only need to buy materials for what you are boxing up yourself.

A simple way to pack one box properly

  1. Tape the base with three strips: one along the seam and one across each end.
  2. Line the bottom with a layer of crumpled packing paper.
  3. Put the heaviest items in first and the lightest on top.
  4. Wrap anything breakable on its own and fill the gaps with paper.
  5. Fill the box to the top, then close it. The lid should sit flat without bulging.
  6. Seal it and write the room and a short contents note on the top and one side.

Common packing problems in Auckland moves, and how to fix them

We have been loading trucks in Auckland since 2009. Most damage we see traces back to a packing decision made days earlier, and most of it is avoidable.

  • Why it happens: Supermarket and liquor store boxes are built for one trip and come in mismatched sizes, so the stack has gaps and weak corners.
  • Fix: Use moving boxes in two or three matching sizes and fill each one to the top so the lid sits flat.
  • Use: Double-walled cartons for anything heavy.
  • Why it happens: People count the furniture and forget the cupboards, the wardrobe tops and the garage.
  • Fix: Start from the table above, then walk through and open every cupboard. Order slightly over rather than under.
  • Use: A mix weighted towards small and medium boxes.

  • Why it happens: Items touch each other, or there is empty space and the contents shift on every corner and speed bump.
  • Fix: Wrap each piece separately, stand plates on their edge, and fill every gap until nothing moves when you shake the box gently. Our guide to packing fragile items has the full method, which matters even more on a long distance move.
  • Use: Packing paper first, bubble wrap over the top, in a double-walled carton.
  • Why it happens: Books go into a large box because it is there. It ends up too heavy to lift and the base gives way.
  • Fix: Heavy things in small boxes, light bulky things in large ones. Kitchen items in medium boxes with paper between each layer.
  • Use: Small boxes for books, wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes.
  • Why it happens: Auckland is humid and showers arrive without much warning. Cheap tape loses its grip on damp board, and boxes stored in a garage soften from the bottom.
  • Fix: Tape the base with three strips in an H pattern. Keep packed boxes inside and off concrete floors. If you move often, compare crates versus cardboard boxes for wet-weather moves.
  • Use: Heavy-duty packing tape, with stretch wrap around anything that has to wait outside.
  • Why it happens: Fabric picks up dust from the truck deck and damp from the walk between the door and the tail lift.
  • Fix: Bag mattresses before the crew arrives. Our movers cover polished furniture with blankets as part of the job. Bagging matters most if your things are going into storage.
  • Use: Mattress bags and furniture covers.
  • Why it happens: Several small top-up trips, plus buying bubble wrap for things that only needed paper.
  • Fix: Order once from a written list. Use towels and linen as padding for sturdy items. Do not buy furniture wrap for a move we are doing, because the truck already carries it.
  • Use: Paper for most of the kitchen, bubble wrap only for the truly breakable.
  • Why it happens: A box that feels fine on the floor is a different thing on the third flight of stairs. Overloaded boxes slow a crew down, and time is what you pay for.
  • Fix: If you can’t lift it comfortably, split it. Label the top and one side with the room it is going to. For an apartment move, book the lift and sort parking ahead of the day.
  • Use: More small boxes, fewer large ones.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I buy packing materials in Auckland?
You can order them from Auckland Kiwi Movers, a moving company based in Manukau. We supply moving boxes in several sizes, heavy-duty tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, wardrobe boxes and mattress and furniture covers. Call 0800 549 149 or use the online quote form, and we will recommend quantities for your home.

How many boxes do I need for a 3-bedroom house?
As a guide, a three-bedroom home needs 50 to 70 boxes, mostly small and medium, plus three to five wardrobe boxes and five or six rolls of tape. Homes with a full garage, a lot of books or a large kitchen need more. Tell us what you have and we will tighten the estimate.

How much do packing materials cost?
It depends on how many boxes you need and which wraps and covers you add, so we price materials with your quote. Give us your number of bedrooms and anything fragile or unusual, and we will send a list with the cost before you commit to anything.

Can I get boxes before moving day?
Yes, and you should. Most people need two to three weeks to pack a home at a sensible pace. Tell us your moving date when you get in touch and we will confirm how and when your materials can reach you.

What is the best packing material for fragile items?
Use packing paper as the first layer on each piece, then bubble wrap or foam wrap over the top for anything that would break if dropped. Pack it in a double-walled carton and fill every gap so nothing moves. For artwork and antiques, ask us about custom crating.

Should I use bubble wrap or packing paper?
Packing paper suits most of the kitchen. It is quick to use, fills gaps well and recycles with your cardboard. Keep bubble wrap for glass, ceramics, screens and ornaments that need cushioning against knocks. Using both together, paper first, gives the best protection.
